How to Make Dal Makhani Home Made

Ingredients for Dal Makhani Recipe

  • Whole black gram – 1/2 cup (soaked overnight)
  • Red kidney beans – 2 Tbsp (soaked overnight)
  • Red chilli powder – 1 Tsp
  • Ginger – 2-inch pieces (chopped)
  • Nutralite Butter – 3 Tbsp
  • Oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Garlic – 6 cloves (chopped)
  • Onion – 1 large (chopped)
  • Green chillies – 2 (chopped)
  • Tomatoes – 2 medium
  • Garam masala powder – 1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Butter – 2 Tbsp
  • Water as required


  • Boil the Whole black gram and Red kidney beans in 3 cups of water with salt and half the red chilli powder (if you want you can add half the chopped ginger too) for 3 whistles in a pressure cooker
  • Open the cooker lid and see if the Red kidney beans are totally soft. If not cook on low flame till the Red kidney beans becomes totally soft
  • Heat butter and oil in a non-stick pan, add cumin seeds as they begin to change colour, add ginger, garlic and onion and sauté well until onions become golden
  • Add green chillies, tomatoes and sauté well, cook it on a high flame
  • Add the remaining red chilli powder and sauté them till the tomatoes are reduced to a pulp
  • Add the cooked whole black gram and Red kidney beans along with the cooking liquor
  • You can add some water if the mixture is too thick
  • Add garam masala powder and salt to taste
  • Cook it on a low flame till the dals are totally soft and well blended
  • Serve it in a serving bowl and serve hot
