How to Make Ulli Vada – Ulli Vada Recipe step by step

Ingredients of Ulli Vada recipe

  • Gram flour (besan) – 4 cups
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring (finely chopped)
  • Onion – 6 (finely chopped)
  • Refined oil – 1 1/2 cup
  • Rice flour – 1 cup
  • Asafoetida – 2 pinches
  • Ginger – 2 Tbsp (minced)
  • Coriander leaves – 2 Tbsp (finely chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required


  • Take a mixing bowl and add gram flour, rice flour, onions, curry leaves, asafoetida, ginger and salt to taste along with some water in order to make a semi-thick batter
  • Heat oil in a deep bottomed pan on medium flame and deep fry small portions of the prepared onion batter in the oil carefully
  • As they turn golden brown colour from all sides transfer it to an absorbent paper to remove the excess oil
  • Serve it on a serving plate and garnish the tasty vada with coriander leaves and serve hot with ketchup or with any chutney of your choice
